Are recruiters still needed?

Good question.

With all of the advertisements from the ‘Big Job Board’ companies targeting employers with the one-stop-shop approach, why hire recruiters? I mean, come on, all we do is troll job boards anyway, right? We don’t need to dig into companies anymore to find candidates with LinkedIn and Facebook (remember the subterfuge needed to get by receptionists and into the engineering department?); recruiters today don’t even know what Rolodex means! Yet, the reality is that….

“Recruiters are needed more today than ever before.”

True, the job has changed in significant ways. Where before the ability to search meant rolling up whole departments from a purloined phone list, it now means being a database search expert. With more savvy candidates our skills of discernment are exercised more often. And that psych degree we all have somewhere? Needed now, more than ever, to understand the motivators behind both sides of the employment negotiation and help the parties through the rapids. And all these wunderkind automation tools? When was the last time an ATS made your life easier? OK, you’ve made a case for inside recruiters, but…

“What about outside and contract recruiters?”

Ah yes, the Paladins of the Recruiting World! Those high priced piranha lurking all over the Social Media sites just waiting to pounce with their 20% fees and car salesman approach; the ones who put hunter back into head hunter! The $75 hr Contractor that won’t make coffee in the morning and really would rather work out of their house. Surely there is no need for these folks!

“Outsourced recruiting is the most cost effect method of Strategic Hiring”

What!?! Hold on there, I thought you said using the inside recruiting resources was the most cost effective and that those outside guys were, well….. bandits! Agency recruiters can be bandits and we all have been through the nightmare of working with the “buddy of the owner/boss” who does a shoddy job, cherry picks the openings and pulls down a fat 20%-25% on every hire (thus totally destroying our annual staffing budget!). We’ve also seen lackluster performance from contingency Agencies that have been engaged, when internal recruiting hasn’t borne fruit. All of these statements are true, yet, an engaged, professional Outsource Recruiting Company that takes on the entire recruiting role under a long term contract will both save your company money and make the HR folks more productive. Outsourced recruiting is a Strategic move on the part of HR Management. And every HR Manager needs to understand that in order to continue to be effective…
